I'm a student at Jujutsu Tech, Tokyo branch. [ Hmmm ] Someone's poster had a quote about exorcists, right? Even had the Japanese word for demon in their skills. I do the same thing, basically.

Are you a combat librarian?

I'm an Exorcist, actually -- same as the guy with the quote. Akuma's the name for a specific monster where we're from -- killing machines powered by human souls. We fight those instead of real demons.

That's pretty intense! We deal with curses, but they're born from mankind's negativity. No human souls involved here unless it's a sorcerer that died and becomes a vengeful spirit.

So we're both only kind of like exorcists.

Akuma can only be made from souls of the departed, called on by their loved ones. So as long as there's someone out there mourning, they can be turned into an Akuma.

Curses are everywhere, but non-sorcerers can't see them. They're usually the cause for things from lethargy to disease. Then there are the strong ones who actively hunt people.

[ It is what it is. Groan... ]

People love mourning, so it must happen a lot. Sounds annoying since people are actively involved.

And it's not something we can really warn them about. If they're faced with a danger they can't see or don't know, then they don't know that it's dangerous at all...

So you guys can't tell the world about Akuma?

The Earl usually sends Akuma over to kill 'em. But the Vatican also thinks it's a holy mission from God that they need to uphold, and the rest of humanity's just the flock that needs protecting or whatever.

That sounds stupid. It'd just be easier if people knew if the consequences are the same as not telling them.

You'd think so. But the higher-ups are all the same, just an echo chamber of what they think is right.

You don't have any bosses like that? The super close-minded kind?

Our teacher's fine, but... The heads of Jujutsu society—like you said, they're all the same. [ Kicks at the ground a bit. ] If they're not going to be out on the field and do something, they should retire.

Let's say that they do -- what would you do if they weren't holding you guys back?

There are a lot of rigid systems and processes in place, but lack in other areas... They could all use an overhaul. We lose sorcerers sometimes from being given the wrong information during a mission briefing.

[ People die every day, but maybe they shouldn't die because of negligence. It's more complicated than just starting a revolution even though he'd like that. Strokes chin... ]

A lot of it is sink or swim even with some teaching and guidance... Less of that would be good. You won't have a new generation of sorcerers if they're dead.

Having someone in the chain of command that's not just the Pope and a bunch of church politicos. Better communication between our branch headquarters... We had a whole group secretly create Akuma-human hybrids and order us to fight with them in the war. That didn't make anyone happy.

[ Satoru only faintly knows about Christianity, specifically Catholicism, but he knows through pop culture and that sounds right even in a fantasy sense of what the big church would do to fight a holy war.

Are you religious?

Nah. Jujutsu's foundations is taught by one of the first Buddhist leaders, but that doesn't mean too much to me.

[ he is a casual buddhist ]

Same here. I work for the Church, but it's strictly a business kinda relationship. I don't think Yuu believes in God either...
