In my opinion, a lot of sorcerers are more self-serving.
Honing your cursed techniques, getting stronger... It's also a display of your place in the pecking order. That's traditional self-interest.

There are those who join and stay because we get paid very well, or working in corporate Japan doesn't suit them. Then those who join because they want to protect their close few... And finally the very few of us who take the strong protecting the weak tagline incredibly seriously. Some of that is genuine, some of it is plainly self-righteous.
