It sounds like it could still be some sort of trauma response, to me... If he'd been abandoned by his father before his father had died, he's already undergone more than most people would experience by five.
That's a good start, I think. You're giving him the choice and putting even a small amount of control back into his hands. Whether or not he decides to take you up on it will ultimately rest with him.
